Gugumental wants ‘fulljoy’ for birthday bash
Before the name Gugumental was solidly associated with the Stone Love family, the talented young selector was the member of another team – the Mental family; and that’s really how he got his name.
“The Gugu part is a name my mother used to call me, and then the Mental came with me being a part of the Mental family that was known in entertainment circles,” the popular sound system selector told THE STAR.
Totally dedicated to his craft, Gugmental says that despite all that’s going on in the dancehall with early lock-offs, there is no place he’d rather be.
“I love the night life,” he said simply, adding that keeping the vibes in the dance high, and keeping patrons happy is his calling.
Gugumental, who will be hosting his birthday bash on September 21, says that he has has one wish for the event – that the people “fulljoy” themselves.
“I want people to come and have fun in a spirit of unity. The dancehall is a fun place. It’s where you go to escape the sometimes harsh reality. Just ‘fulljoy’ yourself for a couple hours, listening to some good music and dancing and having a great time. That’s what I want for my birthday present,” he told THE STAR.
The selector is hosting his bash for the fifth year, but this time, he says, it’s extra special. For the first time, the event is being held on his actual birthday.
“I turn 25 on September 21 and it’s nice to have a birthday party on your right birthday,” he explained.
Over the years, the event has been staged in Southside, but this year there will be a change of venue.
“It gets bigger and bigger each year, so this time around, we are going to Port Royal Street. Plus, it’s neutral ground,” he said.
According to Gugumental, Stone Love is where his heart is.
“It’s every young selector’s dream to play for Stone Love,” he said. “Fada Pow, Geefus, Billy Slaughter guide me along the way so that we can go out there and do the work. Now I’m playing music for people older than me, so I have to study the business. I really believe that more selectors should take time out to study the foundation music.”
