Tallawahs beat Tridents again

- LENNOX ALDRED STAR Writer

The Jamaica Tallawahs made a clean sweep of the Barbados Tridents in the 2019 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), following a nail-biting five-run win at the Kensington Oval last night.

The win ensured that the Tallawahs took two from two from the Tridents, and more importantly, move to four points and off the foot of the CPL table with two matches to play.

The visitors were asked to bat first and could only manage 127 all out in 20 overs, the visitors then restricted the home side to 122 for nine thanks to an all-round bowling performance.

The Chadwick Walton-led Tallawahs found runs hard to come by on a seemingly two-paced pitch, and it was no surprise that the visitors were struggling at 55 for four in the ninth over.

Captain Chris Gayle seemed to still be in “Forty Shades Mode” as he went bowled by Jason Holder for just one in the second over. JP Duminy sent back George Worker, who replaced Andre Russell for six after which spinner Sandeep Lamichhane accounted for Chadwick Walton for 13, and Dwayne Smith for one.

Once again, it took another rescue mission innings from Glenn Phillips who scored 41 from 35 balls to spruce up the Tallawahs innings.

Youngster Ramaal Lewis, batting at number nine, chipped in with a cameo 27 off 22 balls to give the Tallawahs innings some respectability.

STRUGGLING

Needing to score at just over six runs an over, the Tridents also found runs hard to come by as they too were struggling at one stage at 43 for three in the ninth over.

When Johnson Charles fell for 31 with the score on 78 for five in the 15th over, the game turned on its head thanks to spinner Imran Khan and seamer Shamar Springer.

The pair picked up wickets at regular intervals towards the back end of the innings and looked to have wrapped up the game for the Tallawahs. However, a brisk 26 from 12 balls from Ramon Reifer brought back the home side, which needed 15 runs off the final over, into the contest.

Barbadian Dwayne Smith would eventually become the hero for the Tallawahs as he picked up the wicket of Reifer and conceded just nine runs in the final over to seal the win for the Jamaican franchise.
