Battle of The Blues end in stalemate

Chantomoi Taylor’s stoppage time strike rescued St George’s College to claim a 1-1 draw with many time champions Jamaica College in their ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup quarter-final game at the National Stadium yesterday.

Nickashe Murray’s 60th-minute goal seemed to be the winner as time expired but in the end they were left to rue the number of missed opportunities in the second half to put the game out of reach.

St George’s College assistant coach Marcel Gayle said: “I think tactically we played well. We didn’t want JC to get behind us but they breached us one time (for the goal),.”

He continued: “But we weren’t panicking. It was a matter of time before we got it right. I thought in the final stage of the game we could have won it.”

Jamaica College head coach, Devion Ferguson, said that the lapse of concentration in the final moments cost them the chance to get three points in a tough quarter-final group. He said that his team was struggling for recovery time having played so many games on little rest but was not making excuses. “We saw an excellent game from two quality teams. “We got the go-ahead goal but tiredness and a lapse of concentration in the final moments really cost us,” he said.

“We have been playing a lot of football recently with 48 hours or less recovery so it should in the latter part of the game but kudos to George’s. They did well to come back and get a point out of the game.”
