Vox Pop: Which killer dubplate can ‘duss’ a sound bwoy?

-

As the countdown begins to Jamaica’s first ever staging of the Red Bull Culture Clash, anticipation levels are rising. Teams are busy getting ready for the ultimate showdown and securing those exclusive dubplates is at the top of all their preparation lists.

Tony Matterhorn: As a world sound clash champion, the winning dubplate can come from anywhere between a soca dub, a dancehall dub, or a hip hop. It can come from somebody like a Shabba, a Buju, a Bounty, a Sizzla, a Capleton, as well as it can come from an international artiste, because when we won the Red Bull Clash, we used Drake.

It could also come from anyone of our singers – to like a Beres, a Cocoa Tea. It can be any song, yuh can’t pick nuh specific nothing. Yuh can think of a specific song weh yuh think can win it, but it might not, so yuh just affi think outside the box. The teams just affi prepare themselves as best as possible. It’s a performance, enuh, so just come wid your ‘A’ game.

It is no secret that no matter how big a lead one team may have over the others, one ‘wicked’ dubplate could end up swaying the entire competition.

THE WEEKEND STAR asked industry insiders which dubplate they believed could deliver that all important fatal blow.

Supa Hype: Dem affi go find supmn exclusive that nobody has. Everybody a go rush to play the new song dem – the Aidonias, the Govanas, the Teejays, the Popcaans. So maybe one of the teams need to get something from an artiste nobody expects, and these are the things that make the difference. It’s gonna be exciting, interesting, and I’m looking out to see some exclusive dubs.

Boom Boom: I think a Govana One and Move dub could win it. Govi song when yuh flip it inna a sound clash way, it sound different. Yuh ‘kill one and move’ plus Govana do dub plate good, him versatile dem way deh. Right now the crowd expect anything from the team dem, enuh, a so clash go so. Me nuh think dem can do anything to really surprise

the crowd, but dem still affi try. Me want the show get a crowd, enuh, me wah it get the support.

Notnice: The teams just affi get dem best set a dub, have the right intro, know the right things weh fi say, playing dem at the right time, because yuh will have a bad dub and a save dem fi last and don’t reach dat far. But yuh know say Jafrass’ Crime Lord a bad song. A my artiste and a my song so me bias.
