Mt Pleasant happy with Davis effect

- DANIEL WHEELER STAR Writer

Mount Pleasant registered the first head coach change of the Red Stripe Premier League season in September, dismissing Donovan Duckie after the season-opening defeat to Harbour View. Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis was the man appointed to take his place, and at the time, Mount Pleasant’s prospects for the season were uncertain.

Fast-forward to December, and the September decision has resulted in success for the St Ann, based club. Mount Pleasant, in second place with 34 points, four behind league leaders Waterhouse, are in the chase for the championship. Although they suffered their second defeat at home to Cavalier on Sunday, manager David Galloway is pleased with the effect that Davis has had on the club, justifying the decision made on September 1.

“Every coach has a different coaching style and different coaching techniques and mentality,” Galloway told STAR Sports. “Players react to coaching in different ways. He has been getting the support of the players and staff so far. So that’s what’s causing him to be where he’s at right now. When you have a team of good-quality players, you just have to know how

Through late September to October, Mount Pleasant were winless in four games but started a sequence of winning five straight games from the middle of October to the middle of November. Their surge up the table included three wins in December, which has kept them in sight of their ultimate goal, which Galloway says is a result of the continuous effort displayed from the players.

“Our aim is to finish in the top two, and once we are in the top two, know that we are going to grab on to the championship. We just want to take it one day at a time, step by step. We know it’s not an easy road, but we are fighting hard, we are working hard. And the team is more focused than before. And we are putting our all into it.”

Galloway is not anticipating any activity in the January transfer window but does not rule out doing business should the need arise. He is pleased with the squad that they have and also the integration of their academy players into the first team, which has been a major goal of the club since its inception.

Mount Pleasant will finish the calendar year when they face UWI FC at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Monday.
