Death penalty abandoned

Grenada has given an assurance to the internatio­nal community that it will not be executing the lone prisoner who is currently on death row, nor will it conduct executions in the future.

“The Grenada delegation wishes to advise that this prisoner in question has been on death row in excess of five years and based on the decision of our highest court, this death sentence can no longer be carried out,” senior legal counsel at the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Robert

Branch, said while answering questions and recommenda­tions from various members of the Human Rights Council during Grenada’s Universal Periodic Review in Geneva on Monday.

Grenada has not conducted an execution in more than 40 years.

Bajans urged to avoid non-essential travel to China

Barbados is urging residents to avoid non-essential travel to Hubei Province in China, including its capital, Wuhan, where the coronaviru­s has so far killed more than 100 people.

The virus has now spread to12 countries outside of China, with all those cases being imported ones.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade said it is monitoring the situation and that its embassy in Beijing has been in contact with the Barbadian community, particular­ly students in the Far Eastern country.

It said that all of the students in Wuhan who are registered with the embassy have been contacted directly and have reported that they are in good health and are following the instructio­ns
