Darby still fighting for 2020 Governor’s Cup
United Racehorse Trainers Association president Ryan Darby says he has asked the Jamaica Racing Commission (JRC) to lobby on their behalf to have Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL) reverse its decision on the cancellation of this year’s Governor’s Cup.
SVREL chairman Soloman Sharpe confirmed on Monday that this year’s Governor’s Cup race has been cancelled because it does not fit into the racing calendar.
Sharpe also said that a decision would be taken on whether this year’s Superstakes would be contested, because of calendar changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
BEST SOLUTION
“We are lobbying for them to rethink their position that they have taken,” Darby said. “The trainers have asked the JRC to intervene in the matter and to see the best solution going forward.
“The Governor’s Cup and the Superstakes are two of most exciting races on the racing calendar, so we don’t want them to cancel these races because a lot of trainers, grooms and jockeys, as well as the punters, look forward to these races during the year,” he said.
Trainer Gary Subratie said he is also disappointed that the Governor’s Cup has been cancelled.
“I think they should not have cancelled it because this is one of the landmark races in Jamaica and people look forward to seeing this race,” he said. “It has become a way of life for racing in Jamaica and people look forward to that day when the best of the best horses in the country meet in one race.”
Subratie has had eight consecutive third-place finishes in the trainers’ championship.
