Savage sweetness from Pure Sugar

-

New York-born rapper Pure MF Sugar is on the verge of a major breakthrough with her latest single, Bonnie and Klyde, featuring dancehall star Munga Honorebel.

The single, released in August on the King and Queen production and Lock Di Globe Records label, has been added to the rotation playlists of several radio stations.

“The response has been incredible so far,” the artiste, whose christian name is Sugar, said.

Music fans are loving Sugar’s signature ice cream smooth rap flow which blends well with the infectious singalong hooks of Munga Honorebel.

She grew up in New York and has lived the quintessential ‘hard knock life’. She ‘coded’ three times in her life, and came back from the dead, waking in a hospital bed, so she feels ideally situated to make it in the rough-and-tumble music business. Pure MF Sugar is convinced that her hustle mentality will ensure success in the music business.

“I’ve been on my own since the age of 14. I graduated from the school of hard knocks, but I keep pushing and going and building. I have no relatives, if I don’t make it happen, no one is going to. My mother left me bills, my father left me wondering, all I know is fighting for what I need. Now, I am fighting for what I want,” she said.

A certified barber and beauty specialist, she christened herself ‘Pure MF Sugar’ in 2014 and performed as an entertainer under that name. She decided to try rapping for the first time in 2017 when she recorded her first song at I7/SLR Studios

in Atlanta, Georgia.

HARDSHIP

She began writing songs, the effort climaxing into an album dubbed Spliff T.A.L.E.S, which was sort of like catharsis for her, emotional therapy if you will, as she was dealing with several issues after the death of her mother in 2016.

“My life went horribly wrong at that time. I had issues with mom’s family, spouse, college, everything. I recorded seven songs in a week, from scratch, writing them, with my youngest child in 2017-18. It was tough, I was going through hardship with my spouse, I didn’t want to be a doormat for everyone, people always wanted stuff from me, so I put it all out there,” she said.

The album was finally released in 2019 after she remastered and re-recorded the tracks in Jamaica. Some of the tracks include ATOS, DSB (Dead Sound Bwoy), Jah Blessings and Sugar Effect.

“I am a savage but I am savagely sweet, everything I do is so shug,” she said.

She is not Jamaican but loves the island’s culture. “My fourth-generation roots run deep,” she said. She has also released the singles Broke Foot Jig and Enemy Notes recently.
