‘Teddy’ still a part of Tivoli’s plans

- LIVINGSTON SCOTT STAR Writer

Tivoli Gardens coach Philip Williams says veteran striker Jermaine ‘teddy’ Johnson, who was shot and injured on Thursday, will continue to be a part of the team’s plans going forward as long as the 40-year-old remains healthy.

Although Johnson, the former Bolton Wanderers, Bradford and Sheffield Wednesday forward, is in the twilight of his career, Williams believes that his quality, experience and ability to boost morale will continue to make him a vital asset to Tivoli’s immediate future.

(SHOOTING) INCIDENT

“Even before the (shooting) incident, ‘Teddy’ was and still is in the plans where Tivoli Gardens football is concern. He is a true leader, and his experience and quality will help the team overall. Also, where morale is concernws, he helps the team out of certain situation, so he is a vital part of our family at Tivoli and will continue to be,” he said.

Williams acknowledged that at 40 years old, the former national player might not be able to keep up with the physical demands of weekly Red Stripe Premier League competition, but he insists it will be up to the coaching staff to manage him well at this stage of his career.

“We know his body is getting older and probably can’t go through the rigours of (playing) every week. But that is where the coaches come in, to keep him fit and healthy and manage the player and get the best out of him,” he continued.

Johnson, who was reportedly shot in a drive-by shooting on election day, September 3, is said to be recovering well at hospital. “We are happy it’s not worse than it is. We (team members) are in a chat group together and he has been communicating with the team members. So we speak every day, and he’s getting better; he just has to take his time and get there,” Williams added.
