Woman furious after 55-inch TV worked for just one month

- AKERA DAVIS STAR Writer

A26-year-old Spanish Town woman has been left distraught after she bought a television from an appliance store, only for it to stop working within a month. The woman, Kim, told THE STAR that she purchased the 55-inch television for $58,000 in July.

She said that she was given a month’s warranty on the item, and took it back to the store within the given time frame. However, she is yet to be reimbursed.

“It doesn’t make sense to me because it is over a month. How can they have the TV and my money at the same time? ... . The store took the TV and said they will take it back to the manufacturer to see if it is a manufacturer defect and will get it back the following Monday.

“Me a call down them phone and nothing. When I go back to the store them keep on a give me the runaround. At this point I don’t want the TV back, I just want the money and call it a day.”

Kim told THE STAR that it was her second purchase from the store. “Me buy a TV from them about a year ago and now it has a line through the screen, me can barely see anything on it.”

She said she decided to buy the problematic 55-inch television from the store because the price was lower than the other places that she checked. She is now regretting the decision. “Right now me feel like me could a beat myself.”

STRESSED

“A corona time now and people barely making money and stressed, so me buy the TV for my comfort and now I have to be using a defective TV. Plus, $58,000 is a lot of money to just throw away like that,” she said.

All attempts made by THE STAR to contact the store were futile.

When the Consumers Affairs Commission was contacted, the entity established by law to, among other things, resolve disagreements between consumers and sellers, said it does not “usually offer an opinion on a consumer grievance without navigating the avenues towards resolution”. It said that persons who find themselves in a position like Kim should contact its offices in a bid to get matters resolved.
