Chronic Law turns to artiste management

- STEPHANIE LYEW STAR Writer

As one of dancehall’s breakthrough entertainers, Chronic Law is adamant that he knows what struggling artistes and songwriters need to thrive. With the official launch of his 1Law Entertainment, the Hillside lyricist said, “I am able to give the necessary time to my artistes, given the team structure that I am working with.”

The St Thomas native, whose given name is Akeem Campbell, was advised by his own manager, Alexander ‘Bashy’ Jones, who will co-manage the artiste management and production label.

“Through my associating with producers for a while, I have observed how much work it takes to get their productions to perfection. It encouraged me to have an interest in the production side of the music business,” Chronic Law told THE STAR.

His music recording and performance career is still in its infant stages, but the dancehall entertainer says the age of a career does not necessarily determine the level of maturity. His venturing into the management and production side of the music business is to unearth “authentic talents in my community where I grew up and outside as well”.

“I have signed one artiste, his name is Shaqstar, and he is from Seaforth. He is very humble, willing to take correction, driven, and, in my eyes, he is a very talented individual that will go places,” he said. Chronic Law also shared that, for him to consider signing an artiste, they “must be driven, lyrically versatile and have a unique sound but must show humility.”

Later this year, Chronic Law will release his first reggae project, the

Universal Message compilation, which features artistes like Shaneil Muir and Popcaan protégé, Quada. Chronic Law said the Universal

Message project is very dear to him, and his selection of the artistes was very important for him to represent the ‘universal message’ of the reggae project, which speaks volumes in these difficult times.

“I named the compilation

Universal Message to address social concepts, encourage positivity and overall awareness about what we are doing to uplift youths in the world,” he said.

Other artistes on the rhythm include Shaqstar, Neeqah, T’Jean, Takeova, and Noah Powa.

“As an artiste, now business owner, it’s very important to have mutual and respectable relationships with everyone in the music industry. Most of the artistes on this compilation support each other, so it was very easy for us to select based on what our main aim was for this project,” he said.
