Ganja found in courier package

The Narcotics police are now searching for a man who attempted to smuggle a quantity of ganja out of the island, by means of a package being shipped through a popular courier service in Montego Bay.

The weed was reportedly destined for France. Reports by the Narcotics police are that shortly after 11 a.m., a team of its officers and a team from the Jamaica Customs Contraband Enforcement Department were carrying out routine security checks inside the company’s storeroom when irregularities were detected in a parcel.

The parcel that was shipped from Negril, Westmoreland, was searched and found to contain several ounces of ganja. The drugs were seized and an investigation carried out to locate and prosecute the sender.

One police officer told THE STAR that this is not a one-off occurrence.

“The police have their hands full at times, and you would be shocked at some of the illegal items that persons attempt to smuggle out of the country through some of these courrier services,” the senior cop stated. “On this occasion the quantity of ganja was not much, but we have had other instances where persons attempt to ship several pounds of drugs through these delivery agencies.”

The cop said that based on investigations, a number of the perpetrators are visitors to the island.

“After spending holidays in the island, they would pay for the courier services to ship back items to their homelands, and on a number of occasions, their packages are found to contain illicit drugs,” the cop said. The lawman also said the Narcotics police and Contraband Enforcement continue to step up their clampdown on persons attempting to smuggle drugs via this method.
