There is a lot of room for improvements – Powell

- LENNOX ALDRED STAR Writer

Jamaica Scorpions captain Rovman Powell says there is much room for improvement as the team was beaten by five wickets to the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in their opening Regional Super 50 encounter at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Ground yesterday.

The Scorpions first posted 258 for six in their allotted 50 overs, thanks largely to a valiant 97 from Brandon King, 43 from Powell and 40 from Andre McCarthy. Fast bowler Anderson Phillip bagged three for 66 in his 10 overs for the red Force.

Evin Lewis, however, outshone the Scorpion batters, hitting 107 from 92 deliveries to help set up the win for the Trinidadians, who eventually got to 259 for five in 40.5 overs.

CLAIMED WICKETS

Left-hander Darren Bravo chipped in with 59 and Nicholas Pooran 43, as spinners McCarthy and Dennis Bulli claimed two wickets each.

For captain Powell, the Scorpions fell short of their desired run target, hence the defeat.

“I think we left 20 to 30 runs out there and I thought we batted slowly in the middle overs and that cost us some runs,” said Powell.

The Jamaicans, who were 39 for two at one stage in the 11th over, had their innings propelled by a 116- run thirdwicket partnership between King and McCarthy.

While pleased with the effort of King, the captain was hoping the young right-hander would have gone on to get his first List ‘A’ hundred.

“It was a very good inning from King but it’s just unlucky that he didn’t get a hundred. It’s an innings where he can build on and it’s a fantastic start to the competition, so it’s just for him to go from strength to strength now, added Powell.

Already with a loss in the truncated sixteam tournament, The Scorpions will be hoping to bounce back right away when they face the Guyana Jaguars on Sunday.

“The batting isn’t bad but in the bowling, it’s important for us to get wickets and there is a lot of room for improvements,” Powell added.
