Although the coronavirus pandemic prevented former Portmore United midfielder Tevin Shaw from playing in the Canadian Premier League last season, he will get his opportunity this year with Atletico Ottawa.

The club announced on Tuesday that they have re-signed Shaw for the 2021 campaign. The 23-year-old Shaw was signed by the club for the 2020 season but was unable to join the team in Canada because of travel restrictions. The club is owned by Spanish club Atletico Madrid and began playing as an expansion team last year.

In a statement on the club’s website, club CEO Fernando Lopez said that they are excited to finally bring Shaw to Canada and for him to showcase his talent to the league.

“Tevin is a dynamic and versatile player with a wealth of experience at the professional level.

We are looking forward to finally have him join the club,” Lopez said.

“Shaw has been working hard, silently and showed patience throughout the 2020 season while at home in Jamaica. We are ready to welcome him to Ottawa and truly show the country the talent he has inside.”

Atletico finished seventh in their first season in the league and former Spain international and head coach Mista said they regretted his absence from their debut campaign.

“Tevin is experienced and a technically gifted player. We will look to him to give us that touch of quality in the midfield,” Mista said on the club’s website. “We missed him in 2020 and look forward to him finally joining the club.”

Meanwhile, Shaw said that he is eager to get started after having to wait for a year.

“I am excited to re-sign with Atletico Ottawa. It was difficult to watch The Island Games from home n 2020. I felt like I should have been out there on the field with the squad. I can’t wait to get started in Ottawa,” he said in a release.
