Family puzzled by woman’s death in crash
While clutching her five-year-old grandson in her arms, Cherry Anderson muttered, “Jay, a me a your mother and grandmother now, mommy gone to rest.”
Anderson couldn’t hold back her tears as she thought of her only daughter, Sashane Berry, 27, who died last Friday in what police say is a motor vehicle crash.
Reports from the Shady Grove police in St Catherine are that sometime after 11 p.m., they received phone calls about a crash along the Lluidas Vale main road. Officers who responded observed a grey Nissan motor car, which appeared to have run off the road. Berry was seen alone inside the vehicle. She was then assisted to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
“When me come home in the night me nuh see her and me ask me grandson and him say, ‘Mommy gone on the road’; and me say to myself, a where Sash gone and a corona time? That night was the first me ever go in and search for my daughter, because me just never feel right,” she said.
ATTEND A PARTY
Anderson said that to her knowledge, her daughter had left home to attend a party with friends, so they are puzzled how she was the only one found in the car.
“Me nuh know how me a manage, me just a tremble from it happen. Me go doctor yesterday and get some sleeping pills and them barely a work. Me can’t sleep because every time me shut me eye a me daughter me see a say, ‘Mum’,” Anderson told THE STAR.
The 51-year old was in bed at their Orange Field, Linstead home when she received the devastating news from a caller.
“Me say ‘Don’t tell me no foolishness’, and me hang up the phone,” said Anderson. “About 20 minutes it take me to really come to me senses.”
Berry and Anderson shared a tight-knit relationship. She described her daughter as her “heartbeat”.
“Anywhere you see me you see my daughter, anywhere me go people ask if we a sister to how we mesh. If me have a money and me hide it, a she me tell; she is like my right hand,” she said. “Me nuh know how me a go do without me baby; only God understands.”
Anderson said that her daughter was the most humble and sincere person you would ever meet.
“My daughter don’t talk. All when we at our bar and anybody trouble her, only thing she will say is, ‘Behave you self nuh’, and she done; not anther word. If you a quarrel with her, she just get up and move. Sash don’t create problem, but God knows best,” said Anderson.
