- DANIEL WHEELER Staff Reporter

National defender Oneil Fisher will get a fresh start to his career at the home of five-time Major League Soccer (MLS) champions LA Galaxy.

The club announced on Monday the signing of the 29-year-old, who has been a free agent since being released from previous club DC United. Fisher missed the entire 2019 season with a knee injury but managed to return for the 2020 season, where he made 12 appearances. He did not participate in the MLS is Back tournament, the official restart of the season that was hampered by COVID 19.

LA Galaxy club General Manager Dennis te Kloese said that Fisher’s versatility in defence will become a great asset to the team for the upcoming campaign.

“We are excited to have Oneil join the LA Galaxy,” Kloese said on the club’s website. “He is a talented defender who can play multiple positions along the backline and brings versatility and MLS experience to our defence. We look forward to him joining our club and adding depth to our defence.”

Fisher’s previous MLS experienced started in 2015, when he was drafted by the Seattle Sounders in the second and was part of the team that captured the MLS Cup title in 2016. He spent three year in Seattle before he was traded to DC United ahead of the 2018 season. He made 24 appearances in 2018 before a knee injury in September of that year ruled him out for the season.

The 2021 MLS season is expected to start on April 17, with teams given permission to begin preseason training on February 22.
