17-Y-O SHOT DEAD IN HIS HOME

- HOPETON BUCKNOR STAR Writer

Detectives attached to the Lucea police in Hanover have commenced a probe into the shooting death of a 17-year-old, and the wounding of his brother at their home in Campbell’s Hill, Lances Bay, on Tuesday morning.

The deceased has been identified as Zyion Curtis, otherwise called ‘Hill Top Boss’, of Campbell’s Hill, Lances Bay. He was a student of Rhodes Hall High School, also in Hanover.

His 24-year-old brother, who was also shot and injured during the incident, is in hospital in critical condition. Reports by the Lucea police are that about 1:30 a.m., the brothers were asleep when a group of armed men kicked open the front door to the two-apartment board dwelling house and shot them multiple times. Their mother, who was asleep in the adjoining room, escaped unhurt.

STILL IN SHOCK

The police were summoned and upon arrival, the injured were rushed to the Noel Holmes Hospital in Lucea where Curtis was pronounced dead.

When THE STAR visited Campbell’s Hill yesterday, residents were still in shock. Several relatives also had to take Curtis’ grandmother to hospital, as she fainted after hearing of the shooting.

The victims’ uncle, Marvin Grant, said that his nephews were not troublemakers. “To my perspective he (Zyion) is not a vile person. As you know dem little young boy have dem little bike, an dem ride up an dung, but as to be a known troublemaker? No, and we did not expect this to happen to him,” he said. “Him brother a 24, and wi call him TJ, an him worse. Him nuh trouble nobody, him an everybody get on fine. Him have a form of disability and him cah talk so good, so all a wi mek joke affer him sometime.”

He added, “Di last thing mi hear is that dem operate pon him, an him come outa surgery, an all a wi a pray fi him mek it, an’ pull tru.”

One senior police officer told THE STAR that the police have not yet established a motive for the attack but hope to make a breakthrough soon as they are working with strong leads. The cop also said that the parish has seen a rise in murders over the past two weeks, with five of the parish’s eight murders taking place within that period.
