Prospec wants to empower women
Jamaica- born, New York- based dancehall recording artiste Prospec says his latest mission is to get the attention of the female audience with the single ‘Cut Your Losses’.
The track speaks to the problems women of today’s society are facing in their personal relationships with the opposite sex, and is aimed at uplifting women to know when the time is right to move on before one experiences heartbreak.
“I was seeing what women around me, in the news, everywhere, were going through with relationships and some not knowing how to conjure up the strength to walk away, even when the situation they were in, was toxic and it became my inspiration for writing this song,” said Prospec. He said that the feedback has been “incredible”, especially from females.
NAVIGATING DANCEHALL FOR YEARS
Prospec, raised between Greenwich Town and Waterford before migrating to the US, has been navigating the dancehall scene for years, recording professionally as early as 1995 on a Sly and Robbie-produced rhythm. But the song was never released. His first official release was in 2018, another tribute to women titled Mama Cry.
The original version of Cut Your Losses was released last June. Due to the reception, the deejay decided to team up with Macka Diamond, who is known for being very vocal on related topics, for the remix version which was uploaded to YouTube in December. Both artistes believe it is a timely track, especially as International Women’s Day is on March 8.
“It is one of two music videos I had anticipated recording for the first time in my home state, but given the conditions we are working with, it won’t happen again,” he said. “The other is coming out of a web-series called Born To Traumatize, featuring Thurteen13, another NY-based, reggae-dancehall recording artiste who also has a verse on the Cut Your Losses remix.”
He also has a deep interest in film and is featured as an actor in the web-series for which he self-produced a rhythm and song with the same title. Prospec said he is working on various projects including a 15-track album titled, Still Nah Laugh.
