SHAW’S PROLIFIC GOALSCORING FORM CONTINUES

- DANIEL WHEELER Staff Reporter

The transfer speculation surrounding national striker Khadija Shaw has not slowed down her exploits. She found the net for the 21st time this season as her French club Bordeaux edged Montpellier 1-0 during their French division one match on Saturday at the Stade Bernard Gasset on Saturday.

Shaw broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, taking down a deep pass from Ines Jaurena before finishing from close range past Montpellier goalkeeper Lisa Schmitz. The win comes in the aftermath of the club securing their place in next season’s Women’s Champions League after Paris FC’s 3-2 defeat to league leaders Paris Saint Germain (PSG) last Thursday, ensuring that Bordeaux will finish in the top three for the first time in their club’s history.

The team is currently setting club records this year, already having more wins (14) than any other season in the first division with two matches left. The team’s rise has been meteoric since launching in 2015 and gaining promotion the following season. With Champions League qualification secured, Shaw turns her attention to securing the golden boot crown as the race for top scorer will come down to the final weeks of the season.

JOINT LEADING GOALSCORERS

PSG’s Marie Antonette Katoto, who along with Shaw were the joint leading goalscorers entering the weekend, also scored her 21st of the season during PSG’s 2-0 win yesterday against Le Harve. While Katoto will have three more chances to increase her tally, with PSG still to play their rescheduled fixture against defending champions Lyon on May 30, Shaw only have two opportunities left. One of them will be against Lyon on May 21st and on the final day of the season, on June 5, against Guingamp.

Shaw’s excellent performance in her second at the club has reportedly been brought to the attention of English Super League club Manchester City, who are in the running to sign her this summer. According to a recent interview with British journalist Richard Laverty, Chelsea, who secured back-to-back titles yesterday, are also interested.

Shaw is among the provision roster called up for the Reggae Girlz international friendlies against Nigeria and world champions the United States next month.
