DJ Hawk finding synergy for projects

- STEPHANIE LYEW

Knowned as an expert radio, club disc jockey and music producer, Alexander Haq, who goes by the name DJ Hawk, has “creatively” gone around the world and back for his latest project.

“It is amazing what can be achieved by making a few links,” DJ Hawk said.

“It started out with me working on a beat with Chimney Records while I was in Jamaica, then I took it to Miami. After that, I made links with recording artistes Stoppa in Houston and Pzee Fire in Nigeria to lay the vocals.”

DJ Hawk was raised in the ‘90s, the golden age of hip hop, R&B and dancehall, and was surrounded by a generation of new sounds as he became established in his field. He feels good knowing he can find creative energy that complements his own.

His latest production, Escape, was done in collaboration with Chimney Records.

Outside of streaming numbers and sales, DJ Hawk said that it is always good when positive synergy can be captured and maintained for a project and between production houses.

GREAT MUSIC

“I have a great working relationship with Jordan and David. I figured, they make great music, and I make great music, so collaborating with the two of them could not be harmful,” he said of the Chimney Records’ owners and producers Jordan McClure and David Hayle.

He worked with them previously in 2018 on You

Want It, which featured vocals from Tarrus Riley, XO, and Abrina.

“It is always an honour to be able to achieve such a great synergy. It is not the first time we’ve worked together, and there is definitely much more to come from that,” he said.

DJ Hawk is currently working with musicians and artistes worldwide to release his debut compilation EP encompassing years of concepts. Additionally, he shows an interest in the area of ‘artistes and repertoire’ since, he said, he “finds joy in hunting and shaping talent”.
