Relief for Patrick!

They are no longer the only Jamaica Premier League team without a win this season and Molynes United head coach Anthony Patrick says that he feels they are in a position to continue improving with a play-off berth still among their goals.

Molynes United finally got their first win of the 2021 Jamaica Premier League season at the sixth attempt, a 1-0 win over Humble Lion last Saturday evening as they ended their five-game winless run. Nicholas Nelson’s 88th-minute free kick was enough to seal all three points as they moved to ninth place with six points.

It was also the first win of the season for new head coach Anthony Patrick and despite not testing Humble Lion goalkeeper Dennis Taylor as much as they would have liked in the second half, he said that he was confident that they would get their reward in the end.

“We asked them to take a lot of shots but they went for power, the brute force, not going for finesse but they are youngsters and we ask them just to be calm and collected and wait on the opportunity. And when it comes, try and grasp it with both hands,” Patrick said. “We got some clear cut chances very early in the second half but we never made use of it but the last 10, 15 minutes we made use of it.”

Molynes United have been on the bad end of late winners, as they lost to defending champions Portmore United 1-0 in their second game of the season thanks to an injury time goal by Portmore’s Damano Solomon. Patrick said that getting a clean sheet was an additional bonus given the way they have conceded goals this season

“When you look at the last three games, we gave up some goals but we came up with a clean sheet (on Saturday). We asked the senior players to take more responsibility,” Patrick said. “When you look at the last 10, 15 minutes we were all over Humble Lion. It was just to get that one in the back of the net and defend it from there.”

Patrick says that while he is taking a game-by-game approach with five games remaining, the play-off is still possible if they build on this performance. Molynes United will face Cavalier on Saturday.
