Injury forces end to Nugent’s season

-

World Under-20 100m hurdles champion Ackera Nugent has ended her season early through injury.

The 20-year-old, who competes for Baylor University, said in a post on social media that she will not take part in the NCAA Championships which run from June 8 to 11, or the National Trials later this month because of an ankle injury.

Nugent said that while she has done her best to compete through the pain, she ultimately had to make the decision to conclude her campaign for this year.

“With my ankle, this year has been a roller coaster, but that has never stopped me from going out there and giving my all,” she said on Instagram on Thursday. “As a fighter, you have to know when to stop fighting and let go, and I just wanted to let you know that my season is over. However, God has helped me along the way to have accomplished my main goal this year and I am at peace.”

Nugent set a personal best in the 100m hurdles this season, clocking 12.45 seconds with a positive 1.5 wind on May 15 at the Big 12 Championships in Texas, becoming the second fastest Jamaican this year. Additionally, she ends her season not having finished below third place in a 100m hurdles event this season on the college circuit. Her last race was on May 28 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where she finished third in 12.93.

Nugent thanked those who have helped her throughout her progression to the senior level.

“I’d like to express my gratitude to everyone who has always supported me throughout my winning and losing seasons, as well as those who have always believed in me before I reached this level,” she said. - D.W.
