Hanover man needs life-saving surgery after bike crash

- SIMONE MORGAN-LINDO STAR Writer

Iroy Wallace, 23, has been in a coma since a motor vehicle crash on Monday, June 6, and the Esher Hills, Hanover, resident now needs a life-saving operation because of it.

But his relatives are unable to fully cover the J$6.5 million required for his total care and are reaching out to the public for assistance. A GoFundMe account that was created two days ago has so far raised US$ 4,343 of the US$30,000 (approximately $4.6 million) goal.

Speaking with THE WEEKEND STAR yesterday, Wallace’s aunt,

Shanique Baker, says her nephew was a pillion on a motorcycle travelling along the Esher Hills main road when he and the driver were hit from the vehicle by a car.

“The person who was riding the bike suffered minor injuries but my nephew got hurt really bad. He has a fractured skull. He has a crack from the front of his head that runs from across his nose up between his eyes. His brain continues to swell and the doctors said he has brain damage,” she said.

Wallace is currently admitted at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St James, but Baker said they are seeking to have him transferred to the Baywest Wellness Hospital, also in the parish..

“He is in need of a surgery to take his crown off so his brain can go back down if possible. We as a family, we are trying to see what we can pull together but we do not have enough and he is in need of an urgent surgery. I was told that the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) room at the hospital where he is staying is full so he is on a regular ward,” she said.

“It is very sad, we do not want him to die but we cannot afford the $ 6.5 million dollars for surgery and recovery that he currently needs. So we are asking for help and are appreciative of whatever we receive. We are also grateful for all the prayers and support,” Baker said.
