As carnival fanatics prepared to jump with the first Carnival in Jamaica since COVID-19 reached Jamaican shores, one couple decided to ‘chip down the road’ together at their first road march.

Abigail Morris and her beau Chevaughn Witter wore broad smiles as they jammed together yesterday in the Corporate Area.

“For me, pure excitement. I did not expect all of this, so based on that I am enjoying and loving every moment of it,”

Morris declared. Although this was their first time at the muchanticipated event of the carnival season, they hey shared they have attended ended

UWI Carnival previously. usly. But it could not satisfy their r soca craving as Witter admitted that there was a desire for the greater carnival experience.

“I’ve always wanted to jump with the big bands. Yea we went to UWI Carnival but we always wanted to be with the big bands,” Witter shared. Witter and Morris, both 26, have been engaged for almost a year, and shared that they enjoy partying together. Soca, they said, was just another way to strengthen their already tight-knit bond. However, it took much convincing on Witter’s part to have his girlfriend attend road march this year, as he is a soca junkie at heart, while she describes herself a ‘soca baby’. She explained that she shied away from the idea of fêting, due to the high costs associated with it. Needless to say, Morris proclaimed that “I can absolutely say I am into it now. Absolutely loving it!” Prior to attending the anticipated road march, the couple revelled at Bacchanal J’ouvert, the third event in the band’s soca events of the season.

Yesterday, the sweltering heat from the afternoon sun did not hamper the couple’s ability to ‘guh dung low’, as they danced to the soca hits blasted by Bacchanal’s trucks. Sunsoaked with their premium liquor in hand hand, Witter wasted no time in stealing a quick wine from his lady.

He told THE STAR that the ultimate carnival experience would not be complete if they had not ‘played mas’ with Bacchanal Jamaica, the island’s oldest carnival band.

“Bacchanal has a very big history and I know [they have been absent] for the past two years because of the pandemic. So I know they would come back with a bang. Bacchanal has been here before the other bands, I grew up hearing about Bacchanal, so it was just a ‘feel right’ moment to choose Bacchanal. It was almost like destiny to jump with Bacchanal. I know that choosing it was not a mistake, this was just an inevitable experience,” Witter, a graduate of Caribbean Maritime University, shared.

Now converted to being a soca lover, Morris said she is eager for next year’s carnival experience. Pleased by his fiancée’s conversion, Witter encourages other inexperienced couples to take a chance with fêting.

“You will enjoy each other because soca [music] is just some instrument to get the bonding right, get the energy up and trust me, you will have nothing more than energy. It’s all about love, energy and enjoyment. I recommend you to come out and enjoy yourself. Take it as a try, you just might like it. We coming to everyone of them next year,” he told the news team.

“For me, pure excitement. I did not expect all of this, so based on that I am enjoying and loving every moment of it.”
