Troublemaker detainee to be transferred
Temoy Genas, the 25-yearold detainee who was involved in a fight at a Corporate Area lock-up after he accused another detainee of masturbating in the showers, was on Wednesday warned by a parish judge to steer clear of conflicts.
“The officers are saying you are the one who is giving trouble. I will say this to you, you are now being transferred to [the name of the facility], do not come back before the court,” parish judge Maxine Dennis-McPherson stressed. Her stern warning came after a custody officer appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court to explain what was happening between Genas and another inmate at the lock-up where they are being held. The inmate, a 42- year- old man, informed the judge on Tuesday that he and Genas have been involved in several confrontations previously and blamed Genas as the instigator. The custody officer corroborated the elder inmate’s statement, adding that Genas has not been able to settle at any lock-up within the Corporate Area, as he often finds himself in conflict.
“Nowhere that I put this man [pointing to Genas], he can stay.
On one occasion, I don’t know how he did it, but he cut the handle off a bucket and made a jammer [informal name for an improvised weapon found inside correctional facilities] and stab this man [the other inmate] in his forehead,” the custody officer revealed. She further shared that most times when Genas’s cell is searched, jammers are found.
“Mr Genas, this custody officer is coming here for the first time and she is saying this about you. You were here yesterday [Tuesday] and other officers say you are the problem,” judge DennisMcPherson indicated to Genas. The inmate then pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding, admitting that he used a jug to hit the other inmate in his head.
INDULGENCE
The court heard further that Genas is to be relocated to a high security correctional facility, to curb his indulgence in fights within the lock-ups.
The 25-year-old, who is also before the courts on a murder charge, was made the subject of a fingerprint order and was remanded in custody until December 9, when he is to be sentenced. His criminal records and a social enquiry report were requested.
