Swaby ready for Paris Saint Germain

Reggae Girlz defender Allyson Swaby, with a day to spare, secured a move to one of the biggest clubs in the world, hoping to hit the ground running as quickly as possible for Paris Saint Germain (PSG).

Swaby, 26, was unveiled yesterday by the many-time French champions, signing a sixmonth loan deal from National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) outfit Angel City FC, which will last until June. The deal completes a process that was first reported on January 13.

Swaby had opted out of the Reggae Girlz’ January training camp in Florida two weeks ago to close the deal. This was confirmed by national senior women’s head coach Lorne Donaldson.

The deal was completed before today’s close of the transfer window after it was reported in the French newspaper Le Parisien days ago that the deal was delayed because of unforeseen circumstances. With her short-term future now secured, Swaby says she is ready for the new challenge that awaits her.

“I’m super happy to be here. It’s been a long process and I’m really happy and excited to be able to put on my boots and go out on the field with my new teammates,” Swaby told the club website. “I am very happy to be here in Paris and I can’t wait to play in front of our supporters.”

Swaby only played twice for Angel City FC last season. She says that she feels ready to adapt to a different style of play given her previous experience in Iceland, where she started her professional career as well as her fouryear stint in Italy with AS Roma, a club where she won silverware in 2021, the Coppa Italia.

“I think just having had the opportunity to see different types and styles of play prepared me really well for this new challenge,” Swaby said. “I’m known for my intense, forward-moving style of play. I think I can evolve in several styles.”

Swaby becomes the first Jamaican international women’s player to play for PSG who are currently in second place in the Division One Feminine. Swaby joins her younger sister Chantelle, Deneisha Blackwood and Yazmeen Jamieson as Jamaican players currently playing in France.

Swaby could make her debut for PSG as early as Sunday when they host Le Harve.
