Ryan Wellington targets double for Harbour View
The grind of battling on multiple fronts has not dampened the spirit or resolve of Harbour View’s captain Ryan Wellington who is not backing from the challenge of leading them to a double-winning domestic season.
Harbour View have one foot in the semi-finals after beating Humble Lion 2-0 in the first leg of their Jamaica Premier League quarter-final on Monday, and they will enter tonight’s second leg of the Lynk Cup semi-final tied 2-2 with Portmore United.
The schedule has tested the depth of the squad as they are about to play their third game in eight days, but Wellington, who scored Harbour View’s second goal in that JPL quarter-final, was clear about their intentions this year.
“We want to win those two titles. We are not shying away or not backing down. We will see how best we can recover and be ready for that Lynk Cup semi-final,” Wellington said.
Harbour View head coach Ludlow Bernard had approached Monday’s game looking to manage the affair, given how their depth has been tested and while they took their chances, it was far from a comfortable performance against the best defensive team in the regular season.
“It was always about taking the chances when we get them, even if we did spill a few chances, but I’m glad we were able to pick up two goals and keep a clean sheet,” Wellington said. “I won’t say that it is a comfortable lead as yet. The fat lady hasn’t sung yet. We still have the next leg to prepare for.”
Wellington credited their support staff amid a crucial stretch in getting them ready with limited turnaround time. With Bernard’s charge of them having to go the tough road to success, Wellington is not shying away from it either.
“It is not easy playing in two competitions, but we have some wonderful trainers and coaches. They try and look into things and see how best they can get us back for each game. We are working with them, and they are working with us to try and get us ready,” Wellington said.
