The Star (Jamaica)

My boyfriend does not pressure me for sex

‘It seems to me that you have fallen in love with a very decent young man’.

Dear Pastor,

I am a 17-year-old girl and I enjoy reading your column. I read it every day.

Whenever my mother buys THE STAR, I turn to your page. That is the first thing I read in the publication. Sometimes when I see juicy letters, I take THE STAR to school and show my friends and we all discuss it.

I am not sexually active, but I have a boyfriend and he is a Christian. Sometimes I ask him if he does not feel for sex. Once when I asked him that question, he asked me whether I was ready. I told him I was not ready, but some of my friends had been having sex and I pretend that I am doing so too. He told me that I should not pretend or tell lies on myself.

We have gone out together. We have held hands and we have engaged in French kissing. We do not go out often because he is always saying that he has assignments to complete, and, although he is 19 years old, he is respectful. I would also say he is obedient to his parents. He does not like to be out late. We have been out together and, at 10 p.m., his mother was calling and asking him where he was. I really like this guy. I have introduced him to my parents and he and I have visited his church. He also introduced me to his folks. He said that he would like to take me out on Valentine’s Day. I am saving up my money to buy myself a lovely outfit to go out with him. I do not know what I should buy for him as a Valentine gift. Do I have to buy anything for him at all?

Dear D.M.,

It seems to me that you have fallen in love with a very decent young man. I am glad that you enjoy reading my column.

You don’t have to lie and pretend that you are sexually active. In fact, when your friends are talking about how they engage in sexual activities, you do not have to comment at all. Your parents are doing their best for you, and your boyfriend’s parents continue to try to help their son. I hope that they will like you. Take good care of yourself.

I am sure this young man uses handkerchiefs. He would appreciate a quarter dozen or so from you on Valentine’s Day.
