Rebel Clan looks to make impact in 2024

- SHANEL LEMMIE Staff Reporter

Though known as the offspring of reggae legend Tony Rebel, the Rebel Clan is marking 2024 as their breakout year. While they do not perform as a collective, the group is comprised of four of his children, soloists Davianah, Abatau, Tanzie and Imeru Tafari, the latter two he shares with fellow reggae icon Queen Ifrica.

Headlining night two of the recent Rebel Salute festival, all four said they have projects coming out this year. Imeru Tafari will be the first to release his album, which is slated to drop within the next month.

“The timing of it is going to be like two weeks or three weeks from now. This is a surprise by the way because I wanted to do it as a surprise you know, to just put it out on the people,” he said, adding that the album will include features from Kabaka Pyramid, Samory I, Popcaan and his mother.

He explained, “It’s dynamic, you will have heap a greats on it. That project is my debut project and I really love it. I did it from my heart and I hope that my fans can really appreciate it. It’s going to be phenomenal so just look out for me.”

Also releasing a major project in the coming weeks is Davianah. Currently without a date for her EP Love Season, in this sonic era she explores her identity at ‘Rebel Bad One’.

“Mi a put in the work. I’m doing my best to be active and keep at it,” she said. “I mean what can I say? I am my own person, I have my own mind and being adult, I do what I want.”

Similarly toiling away, Abatau said he has been steadily working to make a name independent of his famous father.

“It’s a mind thing. You affi know yourself because if you drop dung tomorrow, nobody nah drop dung aid you. You affi know weh you a do. So even though my father is

Tony Rebel, him a already Tony Rebel, me cyah come say me a Tony Rebel the second. Mi name Abatau and me affi show Jamaica why me deserve a spot because di people me a do di music for,” he said.

Though promoting his single The Truth, which features his dad, Abatau said that while he has learned from him, he cannot get comfortable.

“Mi cyah say every year we do Rebel Salute, we affi try prove a point and take it serious. It come een like exam.”

While she took some time away from music last year, the baby of the group, Tanzie, said she is ready to come back with full force.

“After last year I kind of put the mantle down slightly but not forever because I’m taking it up back this year. I was really trying to focus on writing and recording ... so I have one bag a song put down to release. So this 2024, everybody can get everything and hear Tanzie for real.”
