Titchfield progressing in track and field
Titchfield High School from Portland are among several lowprofile teams who have shown improvement in their track and field programmes, and have added to the competitiveness that has taken place so far this track and field season.
Present at several development meets, Titchfield’s athletes (both boys and girls) have had decent performances, which has coach Stacy Salmon pleased with their surge.
“Mentally, we as coaches work as a team to make sure our athletes are prepared and know exactly it is hard work; but whatever you put in, you will get in the end,” said Salmon.
“As coaches, we are satisfied with what they are doing now, and we are pleased with the performances.”
Titchfield’s Chavauna Grant clocked 25.49 seconds in the Class One girls’ 200 metres at Saturday’s Queen’s Grace Jackson Invitational meet to finish second overall behind Abigail Wolfe of Wolmer’s Girls’ School.
Salmon is upbeat that Titchfield will improve their performances at this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs) after the girls failed to garner a point last year, and the boys collected 11 to finish 18th in the standing.
“I am very confident that both teams will do better than last year, as there are a few athletes who we expect to do very well,” she said.
Salmon failed to point out specific athletes; but argued that Titchfield’s performances at the various weekend meets have galvanised their athletes in getting better.
“When these athletes perform well at these meets, it motivates them to continue, and at the same time, it motivates other athletes to join the track and field team,” she shared.
“The support for the teams is good as the parents give thumbs up to the programme. I must say, our principal, Mr Richard Thompson, makes it a duty to travel and sit with the kids at these meets, and his presence is a major motivational factor for these athletes.
“Watch out for Titchfield this year at Champs,” Salmon warned.
