Camperdown’s Sullivan drawing inspiration from record holder Clarke
Camperdown High School’s sprint hurdler Matthew Sullivan is inspired by his former schoolmate Roshawn Clarke, who, after leaving the institution two years ago, has excelled in the 400 metres hurdles at the international level.
Sullivan opened this season in style, clocking a personal best of 13.70 seconds in winning the Class One boys’ 110 metres hurdles at the recent Pure Water/JC/R Danny Williams development meet, the first of the season.
He is now optimistic about the season, especially since being advised by Clarke, the under-20 world record holder in the 400 metres hurdles and fourth-place finisher last year at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
“Seeing what Roshawn has gone on to do in his event has inspired me to do well. He helps me with my self-confidence by telling me how to relax before my races start, and he also gives me some technical tips in my event,” Sullivan said.
Meanwhile, Sullivan stated that the fast time at the Pure Water/ JC/R Danny Williams meet was unexpected.
“When I saw the time, I was surprised as I just went out there, not expecting anything great,” he said.
Since his opening run, he only managed 14.41 seconds in his other race at the Youngster Goldsmith Classic, where he was second in his heat and 10th overall, but he is not fazed.
“My preparation since my opening race has gone well as at present, I am working on my speed endurance, and I am not worried about my latest performance. I am determined to be amongst the medals at Champs despite a very competitive field,” Sullivan stated.
He will have season leader Daniel Wright of Excelsior High with a best of 13.57 seconds, Richard Hall also of Excelsior and Calabar High’s Shaquan Gordon to contend with, but has no fears. “I know it will be very tough, but as long as I stay focused and execute well, I will be in the top three,” said Sullivan, who stated that he has been spending a lot of time working on his execution over the seventh barrier, which has been his main weakness in his races.
