Coach tags Jamaican boxer world champion

Jamaican boxer Tevoy Barrett, under the mentorship of coach Duane Mitchell, is on a quest to become a world champion, with aspiration­s to secure a spot on the Jamaican team for the Paris Olympic Games.

Mitchell, the head coach at Mitch Athletics gym in Trinidad and Tobago, expressed his belief in Barrett’s potential, stating that the 23-year-old fighter possesses the qualities to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

Having started coaching Barrett two years ago, Mitchell highlighte­d the boxer’s natural power. He emphasised the importance of refining his explosiven­ess, reaction time and conditioni­ng, to transform him into a complete and formidable athlete.

“He has the potential to go very far. He has the potential to become a world champion, and I am not saying that because he is under me,” Mitchell said.

Barrett, who is set to celebrate his 24th birthday on February 20, is gearing up for the Jamaica national championsh­ips commencing on February 22. The middleweig­ht fighter aims to secure a coveted spot at a tournament in Dominica, a crucial step in solidifyin­g his position for the Olympic Games.
