Reggae legend grandsons LOOK TO TRANSFORM MUSIC INDUSTRY

- SHELDON WILLIAMS STAR Writer

Reuben and Jabari Shaw, grandsons of the late reggae legend Denroy Morgan, have committed themselves to combine their talents to drive change in the local reggae industry. They argue that despite its rich potential, the industry has been hindered by challenges stemming from mismanagement and a lack of comprehension.

“As the grandsons of the late Denroy Morgan, you can say entertainment is in our blood, but our networks on and off the island are what contribute to our ability to drive change and get business done,” Reuben shared.

Reflecting on the history of reggae, Reuben emphasised the importance of learning from past missteps, particularly legal disputes and controversies.

“Lawsuits within the reggae community underscore the necessity of upholding ethical standards, honouring agreements, and safeguarding intellectual property. To revitalise Jamaica’s music industry, we must embrace these lessons and commit to sustainable business practices. Innovation, creativity, and excellence are the pillars of reggae’s legacy, and they should illuminate the path forward for Jamaica’s music industry,” he elaborated.

Reuben, a film-maker, actor, and producer, highlighted the significance of honing one’s craft and crafting a compelling narrative.

“Build a team that has the ability to get you to your goals, and understand that you are the owner of the team,” he advised aspiring artistes.

Jabari, identifying himself as a pioneering intellectual property and entertainment attorney, stressed the importance of understanding the music business.

“It is critical that emerging artistes understand that the music industry is reliant on the music business. Learning the business is key to your ability to make a career out of your talent. At the same time, understanding the music business comes from a mix of experience and education,” Jabari said.
