STAR Gibson/ McCook Relays top three selections

- RAYMOND GRAHAM STAR Writer

The Gibson/McCook Relay tomorrow is expected to be another close and exciting encounter among the respective top teams, with the results indicating what will happen at the ISSA/ GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs) next month.

The popular event is scheduled to take place at the National Stadium, and, as usual, STAR Sports has been following the teams’ progress at the various development meets so far and is predicting the top three finishers in selected events.

GIRLS

CLASS FOUR 4X100M

Edwin Allen and Hydel have gone sub-49 seconds twice this season and possess a strong cadre of young athletes. Both met for the first time at the Central Athletics Championships, where the Tashana Godfrey-led Edwin Allen clocked 48.49 seconds to turn back Hydel’s 48.92 and should make it back-to-back wins.

CLASS THREE 4x100M

In a brilliant display at

Central Championships, led by an outstanding second leg from sprint hurdler Adora Campbell, St Jago blew away their rivals to clock a fast 45.58 seconds to win. They are the only team to go sub-46 seconds this season.

1. St Jago 2. Edwin Allen 3. Hydel

CLASS TWO 4x100M

This one is expected to go down to the wire between Hydel, St Jago and Edwin Allen, where all three were involved in a close finish at the Central Championships. Hydel prevailed in 45.54 seconds ahead of Edwin Allen’s 45.56 and St Jago’s 45.86. However, the Thieanna Lee Terrelonge-led Edwin Allen should turn the tables.

3. St Jago

CLASS ONE 4x100M

With the limited quality among this group this year, any number can play and could come down to the best baton exchanges.

1. Edwin Allen 2. Hydel 3. St Jago

OPEN 4x200M

The outstanding Terrelonge is expected to play a crucial role.

1. Edwin Allen 2. Hydel 3. St Jago

OPEN 4x400M

Edwin Allen are the fastest this season with 3:38.27 seconds at the Milo Western Relays, but will have a quality Hydel to contend with. Hydel’s Alliah Baker, Abigail Campbell and Jody-Ann Daley should turn back the Tonyan Beckford-led Edwin Allen team.

1. Hydel 2. Edwin Allen 3. Holmwood Technical

OPEN 4x800M

Holmwood looked a likely winner at the Milo Western Relays with a big lead for most of the race but lost on the anchor leg to Edwin Allen, who had a brilliant run from Rickeisha Simms. Holmwood should get things right this time and retain their title.

OPEN MEDLEY RELAY

No stopping Alphansus Davis.

BOYS

CLASS THREE 4X100M

Three teams in St Jago, Kingston College (KC) and Jamaica College (JC) have gone sub-44 seconds this season, with the Marquis Page-led St Jago the leader with their 43.56 seconds win at the Camperdown Classic. 1. St Jago 2. KC 3. JC

CLASS TWO 4X100M

KC are given the edge as they are the only ones to go sub-41 seconds this season when they clocked 40.98 seconds at the Corporate Area Development Meet to outlast Excelsior, who did 41.02 seconds. Sub-41 seconds is on the card.

1. KC 2. Excelsior 3. JC

CLASS ONE 4X100M

Sub-40 seconds is likely as the unbeaten Excelsior hope to make it four wins this season. They are the leaders with a school record of 40.36 seconds when they turned back JC in 40.46 seconds at the Corporate Area Development Meet.

JC had their two fastest boys this season, Hector Benjamin and Dontae Watson, watching from the stands in their loss to Excelsior, and both are expected to feature in the event and could make a difference.

1. Excelsior 2. JC 3. Calabar

CLASS TWO 4x200M

Another battle royal between KC and Excelsior is expected, but form should come out on top.

1. KC 2. Excelsior 3. Calabar

CLASS ONE 4x200M

JC are firm favourites to win. Do not write off St. Elizabeth Technical School (STETHS), who could be coming for this event.

1. JC 2. STETHS 3. Calabar

OPEN 4x400M

KC lost to Excelsior at the Milo Western Relays but were ruthless at the Corporate Area Development Meet. Led by Antonio Forbes and Amal Glasgow, they romped to victory in an excellent 3:08.82 minutes to turn back Excelsior by nearly three seconds. They look set to go much faster, as a sub-3:07 minutes is likely.

1. KC 2. Excelsior 3. Calabar

OPEN 4x800M

There should be no stopping JC with their strong cadre of half-milers led by Class One athletes Kemarrio Bygrave and Nellie Ambriton. A superb effort is expected from KC, but not good enough.
