Throws coach expects top performances from Clarendon College at Champs
Throwing coach of Clarendon College, Davion Chantiloupe, is expecting good results from his throwers in both genders at next month’s ISSA/ GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs).
Chantiloupe, a graduate of G.C. Foster College and who joined the coaching staff at Clarendon College in 2017 after a short stint at Edwin Allen, is confident about his throwers and wants them to go beyond Champs.
“My first objective is for the throwers to do well at Champs by winning and breaking records. Also, I want them to get scholarships to overseas universities and to represent the country,” he stated.
Leading the way for Clarendon College among the girls will be Jameila Young in Class Three. She is the sister of former national junior representative Christopher Young, who attended Edwin Allen.
Young is expected to lead Clarendon College’s charge in Class Three. She is the leading thrower in the event in the class with her 44.45 metres, the winning effort at the recent Central Athletics Championships. She has the top five best throws in the class with other distances of 40.60 metres, 40.54, 39.13 and 38.12.
Carla-Kay Brown and Marla Kay Lampart are also expected to do well in the girls’ Classes One and Two.
At the recent Central Athletics Championships, Brown threw 47.15 metres to finish second behind Edwin Allen’s Shamoya Morris in Class One girls’ discus, while Lampart ended third in the Class Two girls’ shot put with a heave of 14.32 metres.
Brown is ranked fourth in the discus with 48.12 metres going into Champs. Lampert is ranked third in the shot put and discus with 14.32 and 45.66 metres, a season-best.
Class One returnee Athelia Pryce has a season-best of 44.85 metres in the discus.
With the boys, Chantiloupe is banking on Class Two athlete Joseph Salmon to do well. Salmon, who won the discus Under-17 shot put at last year’s Carifta Games, was the Class Two boys’ winner at the Central Athletics Championships, with a heave of 16.33 metres. Teammate Lawayne Blackwood was second with 15.98 metres.
Salmon is also ranked highly in the discus, with his season best of 53.52 metres.
Good results are also expected from Cleon Sewell, who was second in the discus and shot put at the Central Championships with 48.83m and 15.78 metres, respectively, while teammate Trent Morris was fourth with 13.75 metres.
