Laden has found ‘Genuine Love’

- NATASHA WILLIAMS STAR Writer Laden’s

Time To Shine singjay Laden is genuinely in love with a dancehall-Afrobeat beat which he said was the inspiration behind his latest single, Genuine Love.

But he told THE WEEKEND STAR that his love-laced single was not aimed at any ‘newfound love’.

“It wasn’t geared to no one specific. The rhythm have dat loving, couple type a vibe but in a Afro-dancehall beat, uptempo. The riddim is where I really got the idea from and I decided I’m gonna go very clean on it. Vibing to the riddim in the studio, that’s where it sent me – to that concept – [of] genuine love,” the Greatness singer shared.

When pressed about the concept not surrounding a new love interest, Laden smiled and said that he has been in love with his lady for years.

“So my home girl can really hold on to this [single] and seh I’m talking about her,” he giggled. “But seriously, it was the riddim that speaks to me.”

While admitting that he is not one of the top 10 trending dancehall acts currently, Laden believes Genuine Love on this rhythm can be a hit.

“The rhythm is everything; yuh know yuh have instrumentals weh can give yuh hit songs, and I think this riddim is one like that. If yuh listen to that rhythm, you’ll hear that it’s very beautiful and it matches my vocals which complements the whole song. I’m feeling this song and I do think it can go places if we market it properly,” the deejay shared.

Since the release of the single on March 1, it has racked up more than 85,000 views and 16,000 likes on YouTube. Laden said the feedback has been “tremendous” and would let the song “take its course”.

The artiste, who spent time in prison for firearm possession, said he is taking his time to catch up with the modernised beats, style and pace of the music, but he doesn’t believe that ordeal impacted his career.

“It’s a new Laden right now. My flow has upgraded because I have to tap in with the younger sound and younger generation of dancehall artistes right now. But I still have my signature sound. I just have to fit in with the style that’s working now. So I’m purposefully upgrading my flow for the younger listeners while staying true to the elders,” he said, adding that he hasn’t faced any condemnation. He promised to release his seven-track EP, Greatness, this summer.
