Dyke overjoyed at Edwin Allen’s 100m act

- Michael Dyke – R.G.

Edwin Allen High’s coach, Michael Dyke, is extremely proud of the performances of his girls in the 100 metres, with all eight making the final, the first time Edwin Allen achieve the feat at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships (Champs), which is taking place at the National Stadium. Dyke’s 100 metres girls piled up 39 points of the 81 they garnered on Wednesday’s second day of Champs.

“The feeling is surreal as I am very proud of the achievements of the girls in creating history, as it was the first time we had a perfect record in qualification to the 100 metres finals. This shows that the girls are all committed to doing well, and it also shows the results of the hard work put in by them,” said Dyke.

Dyke had praises for Renecia Edwards, who finished sixth in Class Two with 11.80 seconds, and Jounee Armstrong, who was second in Class One with 11.52.

“I am particularly pleased with the performances of Edwards and Armstrong. Edwards has been trying to make the team since her Class Four days and only did so last year in her first year in Class Two, but did not make the final. Since her Class Four days at Immaculate Conception High, Armstrong has been off the radar, and it was very good to see her back in a final,” stated Dyke.

He was, however, disappointed in the frustrations shown by top sprinter Theianna-Lee Terrelonge, after she failed to break the Class Two girls’ 100 metres record. Terrelonge gesticulated in disgust by throwing her hands in the air after passing the finish line.

Terrelonge was tipped to break the 11.16 seconds 2018 record of former teammate Kevona Davis, and openly showed her annoyance.

“I was disappointed by her reaction. I sat her down and spoke to her after, as it is not about breaking records, but about teamwork at the Championships in getting points to help the team win.

“I told her that records at the world level, like the World Under20 Championships, which she is gearing for, will be more satisfying as this is the highest level for her,” said Dyke, who stated that she is still very young, and he didn’t want to get hard on her.
