Arnett’s Thompson gets birthday wish

For most football players it is a dream to score a goal on one’s birthday, but it is a desire most players fail to fulfil throughout their careers.

On Sunday, Rushane Thompson joined that exclusive club after he netted a second-half goal to earn Arnett Gardens a 1-1 draw against Portmore United in the Jamaica Premier League.

The goal failed to provide the win for the ‘Junglists’, but helped to salvage a point after they went behind early to Chevaughn Walsh’s 19thminute strike. Thompson, who earned the Man of the Match award for an inspirational performance, grabbed the equaliser with a calm finish from five yards.

Thompson was overwhelmed having accomplished his urge to score on his special day and doing it against his former club made it even more special.

“Words cannot express what it is like to score on my birthday. This was always my aspiration and to score today (Sunday) I am glad I did that, especially on my birthday, against my former club. I was well fired up for this game,” he commented.

Last season, Thompson did not get as many minutes on the pitch as he is receiving this term. He said he has seen his progress and wants to continue that path.

“This season has been a plus. Last season I only got one goal, but I have three this season, two more than last season, so I am moving forward and pushing for more.

“It has been an upward trajectory, and I am proud of my performance this season, and I aim to get more goals, get more assists and try to help my team go all the way and get the title,” he said.

Sunday’s result eliminated any chance Arnett had of finishing higher up the table than fourth, however, Thompson believes getting a draw has its positives.

“We are disappointed we couldn’t win, but we took a point from the game and that’s a real positive for us,” he said.
