In a world of cultural stereotypes, the French stand out. Which is just the way they like it. Even the way they celebrate Christmas marks them out from the rest of Europe.

For one thing, they nearly cancelled Christmas. From 1789 to 1799, the festival of Noël disappeared as a result of the anti-religious fervour of the French Revolution. Church services were banned and carols like The Three Kings had the names of the three kings substituted by current political leaders. For some reason, that updated carol didn’t catch on.
