ASEAN students learn about jobs in Korea
The ASEAN-Korea Centre organized the ASEAN Youth Career Mentorship Program for students from the region studying in Korea on March 25, in cooperation with the ASEAN Youth Network in Korea (AYNK).
The program, at the ASEAN Hall of the ASEAN-Korea Centre in Seoul, aimed to help the students start a career in Korea through mentoring from young ASEAN professionals, the organization said.
“The number of ASEAN students in Korea last year was about 17,000,” ASEAN-Korea Centre Secretary General Kim Young-sun said. “This mentorship program will provide a platform to enable them further to contribute to deepening the ASEAN-Korea partnership.”
The program had two sessions. The first featured a lecture on how to apply for a job in Korea. Given there are considerable differences in the application process between ASEAN and Korea over documentation and interview methods, the first session underscored what is needed to write Korean CVs, resumes and cover letters and answer questions during interviews.
Marilyn Manalaysay, a Filipino who works as a global HR Assistant Manager at GS Engineering and Construction, gave detailed information and tips for ASEAN job seekers.
At the second session, ASEAN youth who had finished their education and started a career in Korea shared their success stories. The session was designed to provide participants with motivation to improve their skills and gain practical understanding of getting a job and working in Korea. A session for networking among participants and lecturers followed. ASEAN youth, who were graduates of universities in Korea and now work at Korean companies, shared their experiences.
The program was the first event of the ASEAN Youth Nights, which aim to provide a platform for ASEAN students to interact with Korean students and raise awareness of ASEAN-Korea relations.
The organization said it plans to hold other events under the title of the ASEAN Youth Nights: the ASEAN Quiz in May, the ASEAN-Korea Short Film Festival in October and the ASEAN-Korea Youth Year End Celebration in December.
