Hyundai Motor Group is demonstrating its excellence in its ongoing electrification drive by sweeping prestigious global awards with its flagship electric vehicle (EV) lineups, the company said Thursday.

According to the group, Kia’s fullsize EV9 won the 2024 World Car of the Year during the New York International Auto Show. Kia is one of the group’s two auto affiliates, along with Hyundai Motor.

Hyundai Motor’s IONIQ 5 N took the 2024 World Performance Car title, which the automaker said proves its electric tech prowess.

Starting in 2022, Hyundai Motor Group has become the world’s top-tier EV maker with its IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 flagship EVs, as well as the EV9, winning global auto awards for three consecutive years. The group’s EV lineups are powered by its Electric Global Modular Platform.

The 2024 Kia EV9 made headlines as a remarkable dual award winner for the World Car of the Year and the World Electric Vehicle.

A group of 100 auto journalists representing 29 countries recognized EV9’s innovative design, spacious seven-seat interior and competitive prices as the key upsides of the vehicle.

“We are hugely honored that the 2024 EV9 has been named the World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle,” Kia President and CEO Song Ho-sung said. “This triumph is a testament to our unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and design excellence.”

“The Kia EV9’s continued success will drive us to keep delivering exceptional vehicles that redefine the driving experience for customers around the world.”

This is not the first time for Kia to have received the award. The Telluride SUV won the 2020 World Car of the Year. Kia’s EV6 GT also took home the World Performance Car of the Year in 2023.

Hyundai Motor Group is going all-out to take the lead in the ongoing EV-led auto paradigm shift. Earlier, the company announced its big investment plan worth 68 trillion won ($50.52 billion) to deepen research and development for EVs and future mobility areas.
