- By Jung Da-hyun

Nodeul Island in the middle of the Han River in central Seoul is set to undergo a transformation into a global spot for art, offering various cultural and artistic experiences for visitors to enjoy.

The opening ceremony of the “Cultural hub of art island, Nodeul,” which will feature performances at the outdoor special stage of Nodeul Island, is scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m., according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

From 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., performances of renowned acts will be showcased, such as the creative Korean traditional music band ADG7, known for blending tradition with modernity, the Ambiguous Dance Company, showcasing dynamic choreographies, and the tenor quartet Fortena.

The stage is designed to accommodate a wide range of genres, including classical music, musicals and traditional performances. Additionally, 20-meterwide and 15-meter-tall LED screens will capture and broadcast the performances vividly.

To ensure inclusivity, the city government plans to provide subtitles and sign language interpretation at all times, allowing a broader audience to fully enjoy the cultural and artistic offerings of the island.

In May, creative organizations will be selected through a public offering to showcase their innovative artworks.

Moreover, the second week of August will feature a K-pop special week, presenting a unique opportunity to delve into various aspects of K-pop and Korean culture, the globally popular trends these days.

Large LED screens on the outdoor special stage will be utilized for live performances and movie screenings, creating a concept reminiscent of camping on the island’s lawn on weekday evenings from May to October.

A detailed schedule of performances, monthly programs and event dates will be available at nodeul.org.

“We aim to provide a rich array of high-quality performances and events, ensuring that citizens seeking diverse cultural experiences can always visit Nodeul Island for inspiration and enrichment, especially those who are tired of daily life,” said Choi Kyeng-ju, the deputy mayor of cultural affairs at the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
