ClouBot introduces AI tutor for foreign language learning

- By Lee Min-hyung mhlee@koreatimes.co.kr

ClouBot is set to achieve a new milestone in the industry of foreign language learning with the firm’s latest artificial intelligence (AI) Speaking Coach technology, Song Suk-ho, CEO of the Seoulbased education tech company, said Tuesday.

The AI tutor is powered by two booming technologies — generative AI and large language models (LLM). Song established the company in 2012 and has since focused on developing more effective education solutions for foreign language learners.

ClouBot showcased the AI Speaking Coach for three days during the latest AI Expo 2024 in Seoul, which started on May 1.

The AI tutor was designed for primary-level students in Korea learnings English.

Song underlined one humanlike aspect of the coach — called C-Maker — which allows teachers to create customized lesson plans without the need for coding. Using the AI tutor, educators can design lessons to fit their curriculum and teaching style, according to Song.

Another unique characteristic of the coach is its interactive learning without real-time prompts. Song said such features make it ideal for young students to learn a new language.

According to ClouBot, its AI education solution uses a system of buttons to guide students through lessons, unlike other AI platforms, which require users to write prompts. This makes it easier for young children to use without needing to type or write prompts.

The tutor’s learning management system (LMS) is also the best fit for educators in schools, according to Song.

“The solution includes a comprehensive LMS for teachers and schools,” Song said. “This system enables educators to assign homework, schedule lessons and track student progress. It also provides feedback on each lesson and records dialogue for review.”

He also expects the rapid rise of LLM technology to affect every corner of the education industry.

“My view is that the educational paradigm will change dramatically over the next two years on the rise of LLM here and abroad,” Song said. “Our AI Speaking Coach represents just one of the many innovative applications of AI in education, and it is likely that we will see more exciting developments in this field soon.”
