Goffin, del Potro reach BMW Open quarters

Safarova, Pliskova in semis of Prague Open

MUNICH, April 28, (AP): Top-seeded David Goffin of Belgium advanced to the quarterfin­als of the BMW Open by beating Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday.

Goffin, who had a bye into the second round, next plays eighth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany, who beat Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4.

Zverev’s huge serve proved decisive even on the slow clay. He had only five aces but won 31 of 32 of his first-serve points, while never facing a break point against Rosol, who double-faulted four times.

Fourth-seeded Philipp Kohlschrei­ber eased past fellow German Florian Mayer 6-3, 6-2 to set up a quarterfin­al against Juan Martin del Potro, who beat JanLennard Struff of Germany 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in his second clay-court match in three years. The Argentine is coming back from another wrist injury.

In Prague, Second-seeded Lucie Safarova extended her resurgence into the semifinals of the Prague Open by fighting past unseeded Hsieh Su-Wei of Taiwan 7-6 (3), 7-5 on Thursday.

Safarova didn’t win a singles match this season before claiming three in a row in Prague.

She improved her record against Hsieh to 2-0 but knew it wouldn’t come easy.

She will face defending champion Karolina Pliskova, who cruised past Camila Giorgi of Italy 6-2, 6-1.

Fourth-seeded Sam Stosur of Australia advanced after beating fifth-seeded Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4) to play top-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova or Monica Puig.

In Estoril, Portugal, eighth-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain reached his fourth clay-court quarterfin­al of the year when he defeated Taro Daniel of Japan 6-4, 7-5 in the Estoril Open on Thursday.
