‘No cash to repatriate women from Malawi’

‘Stay in Kuwait to increase’

KUWAIT CITY, June 6: Immigration officers at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Zambia have rescued four young women said to have been smuggled out of Malawi, reports Al-Rai daily.

According to the spokesperson for Mchinji border Andida Mando, the four women were dropped at the airport recently to board a plane for an overseas country. Mando added the officers questioned the abductor, who gave contradictory statements on why he was taking the women abroad.

The suspect told the officers the women were in Zambia to attend a funeral but later he changed the statement and said he was an agent helping women secure jobs in Kuwait. The Zambian government has returned the women to Malawi and the suspect was expected to be handed over to the Malawi police for further interrogation.

The Government of Zambia has asked relatives of 12 women taken out of abusive work places in Kuwait to pay for their air tickets back to Malawi, saying the government has no money.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Kasaila said the government is too broke to bring the 12 women back to Malawi.

“If their relatives don’t come forward with the air tickets, the women will stay much longer in Kuwait. We have taken the women out of their abusive places and are now with our embassy in Kuwait. As an embassy, we do not get funding to fly such kind of people,” said Kasaira.
