The Criminal Section of the Appeals Court, led by Judge Muhammad Al-Mutairi, overturned the verdict of a lower court that sentenced an officer in the Interior Ministry to six months in jail for negligence of duty, suspended execution of punishment for one year and ordered bail of KD 50 subject to good conduct in the future, says Al-Seyassah.

The officer, who works at a police station, was tasked to guard the arrested people as part of his responsibilities. He was accused of negligence and helping detainees escape when two of those arrested escaped.

The two fugitives planned the escape as they called their accomplice while they were in police custody and the latter brought necessary tools to help them escape through the toilet using the jack to expand the window. They then ran to a car waiting for them outside.

Attorney Majeda Al-Khamis, the defendant’s lawyer, pleaded for acquittal of her client. She argued there is no evidence showing negligence on the part of her client due to the fact the he was watching over several other detainees and those who escaped went through the toilet, far away from his monitoring position. She further argued that her client had no criminal intention.
