‘Taqadomi’ calls for caution against continued attacks on public freedoms

‘Extension of detention period a setback’

-

KUWAIT CITY, July 27: The General Council of Kuwaiti Progressive Movement (Taqadomi) considers the extension of precautionary detention period as a setback to the progress that has been achieved in this aspect, calling for caution against continued attacks against public freedoms, reports Al-Seyassah daily.

It affirmed that the complaints are being lodged against the seeking of help from Bangladeshi security officials, indicating that the council denounced the government’s insistence to carry out studies for selling the public sector to private companies.

The council mentioned this in a press statement issued after its 18th meeting which was held on Saturday and was presided over by Acting Coordinator Fawaz Farhan. He discussed the items on the agenda as well as some matters concerning the organizational affairs. During the meeting, some of the developments in the political arena and the general situation in the country were also covered. The council discussed the National Assembly’s approval to extend the detention period from 10 days to 21 days in all cases and from two days to four for criminal cases. It considered this as a throwback from the progress that has been made in this aspect when the detention periods were reduced previously by the council of February 2012.

It cautioned against the ongoing attacks on public freedoms under certain excuses and justifications with the aim of hiding the real intention behind this approach taken by the authority.

The council expressed their concern about the steps being taken by Ministry of Interior to bring securitymen from Bangladesh and allow them to wear Kuwaiti security uniforms and work in the country, even though Ministry of Interior had issued a statement in which it stressed that such a move is valid and aimed for seeking the officials assistance in the technical sectors only. Nevertheless, doubts continue to be raised about the use of Bangladeshi securitymen when there is increasing rate of unemployment among Kuwaiti youth in the country.
