Carroll agrees extension with Seahawks

Falcons release Hester

NEW YORK, July 27, (RTRS): Seattle have reached an agreement with coach Pete Carroll on a contract extension that will keep him with the NFL team through 2019, the Seahawks announced on Tuesday. No financial details were released. The news comes two days after the Seahawks agreed a new contract with general manager John Schneider.

Carroll, 64, is the oldest coach in the NFL and has helped build the Seahawks into one of the league’s most successful teams in recent years.

In six years with the team Carroll has a 60-36 regular-season record and gone 8-4 in the playoffs. He led Seattle to two Super Bowls, including its first championship in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Carroll was entering the final year of a three-year deal.

The Cleveland Browns placed recently reinstated wide receiver Josh Gordon on the active/non-football injury list on Tuesday. Gordon, who passed a physical earlier in the day, injured his quadriceps while working out on his own, according to the team.

The Browns said that Gordon is expected to miss “at least a couple weeks” with the injury.

Four-time Pro Bowl return specialist Devin Hester was released by the Atlanta Falcons. Hester, 33, holds the NFL records with 20 return touchdowns and 14 punt return touchdowns.

Four-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Jake Long has agreed to terms with the Baltimore Ravens.

The agreement is for one season, according to ESPN. Long is a former No. 1 overall selection of the 2008 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Dallas Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory is reportedly facing a longer suspension due to another violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy, according to multiple reports.

Gregory reportedly would miss the first 10 games of this season due to his latest violation.

The Cincinnati Bengals placed Pro Bowl tight end Tyler Eifert on the physically unable to perform list and veteran linebacker Rey Maualuga on the active/non-football injury list.

Anquan Boldin is on the verge of signing with the Detroit Lions and rejoining one of his former offensive coordinators.

The 35-year-old Boldin is expected to sign a one-year deal, according to multiple reports. The Lions are in need to add depth at receiver following Calvin Johnson’s retirement in the offseason.

the 2016 NFL Draft, remains unsigned and the San Diego Chargers seem to have no idea when to expect him to arrive at training camp.

The Ohio State defensive end is one of three first-round picks currently unsigned, including former Buckeyes teammate Darron Lee of the New York Jets.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed wide receiver Louis Murphy and guard J.R. Sweezy on the physically unable to perform list.

Tampa Bay also put safety Elijah Shumate on the non-football injury list and signed offensive lineman Joel Hale to a contract. Also, offensive lineman Garrett Gilkey has been waived following a failed physical.

The Indianapolis Colts signed freeagent tight end Chase Coffman, the team announced. Indianapolis also placed running back Tyler Varga on the reserve/did not report list and waived cornerback Daniel Davie.

The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Coffman has caught 18 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns in 37 career NFL games. Varga played in three games for the Colts last season. Davie was signed as an undrafted free agent in May.

Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard was placed on the physically unable to perform list to begin training camp. Howard, a rookie second-round pick expected to start, had what coach Adam Gase termed “minor” knee surgery. Gase said the worst-case scenario based on medical reports would be getting Howard back for Week 1 of the regular season in September.

The Denver Broncos signed undrafted rookie linebacker Darnell Sankey to a contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team, which also waived rookie long snapper Nathan Theus.

But Halep, coming off her second title of the season at home in Bucharest, was in control throughout, never facing a break point in the first set and shaking off an early tremor in the second to win in 86 minutes.

Canadian Francoise Abanda also made it through to the second round, downing China’s Zheng Saisai 6-1, 7-5 in a match held over from Monday because of lengthy rain delays.

After the match, Zheng took to Twitter to express displeasure with the stringing of her racquets.

Zheng said both of her racquets had been mistakenly strung with 10 pounds lighter tension than she had requested.

Britain’s Johanna Konta, less than 48 hours removed from lifting her first WTA title with an upset of Venus Williams in Stanford on Sunday, reached the second round with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over American Shelby Rogers.

Konta, who moved up from 18th to 14th in the world on the strength of her Stanford run and is now knocking on the door of the top 10.

Only three other British players, Virginia Wade, Sue Barker and Joe Durie, have made the top 10.
