Kagawa sparks Dortmund romp in German Cup

-

MUNICH, Aug 23, (AFP): Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa scored twice as Borussia Dortmund eased into the second round of the German Cup with a 3-0 victory away to fourth-division Eintract Trier.

Kagawa struck with just eight minutes gone before adding a second on the half hour, with close-season signing Andre Schuerrle netting his first goal since arriving from Wolfsburg on the stroke of half-time.

Croatia midfielder Alen Halilovic, who joined from Barcelona last month, grabbed the winning goal for Hamburg as they laboured to a 1-0 win at third-tier Zwickau. Werder Bremen and newlypromoted RB Leipzig were the only two Bundesliga casualties from the opening round, with defending champions Bayern Munich cruising to a 5-0 demolition of Carl Zeiss Jena on Friday courtesy of a Robert Lewandowski hat-trick.

The draw for the next round of the competition will be made on Friday following the opening game of the Bundesliga season between Bayern and Werder at the Allianz Arena.

In Madrid, Victor Diaz scored the only goal as Leganes defeated Celta Vigo 1-0 in the club’s first ever game in the Spanish top flight.

Diaz steered in from a corner on 75 minutes to hand Leganes victory on their La Liga debut, having won promotion to the top tier by finishing runners-up in Spain’s second division last season.

Leganes, who were founded in 1928, will host Atletico Madrid at their modest 8,000-seater stadium on the outskirts of the Spanish capital in their first home game next weekend before champions Barcelona visit next month.
