Kuwait Society for Human Rights signs MoU with KU Workers Union
Mechanism for joint action eyed
KUWAIT CITY, Sept 28: Khalid Al Hamidi Al Ajmi, Chairperson of Board of Kuwait Society for Human Rights pointed that there is an urgent and essential need to develop networking mechanisms with organizations and trade unions of all types at the national level that can help to unify the efforts in protecting human rights and promoting the leading role of civil society in the development of society.
Al Ajmi added that in the context of the openness of Kuwait Society for Human Rights at partners from various organizations and trade unions, the society with the Union of Workers at Kuwait University signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday, Sept 28 aimed at a mechanism for joint action, regulation of the nature of the activities and meetings, strengthening and developing ties of cooperation and coordination towards broader horizons that can contribute in the exchange of experiences, raise community awareness of human rights, and take advantage of the experiences between the two parties.
Implementation
He said that the implementation of the agreement will start by the implementation of the National Campaign of the Right to Occupational Health and Safety in the Workplace (Prevention), which aims to apply an integrated system for occupational safety and health in the workplace, cope with the plans and programs of the government overall development, and be in conformity with the best international standards.
Al Ajmi pointed out that the campaign will contribute to the creation of new action and thinking mechanisms in occupational health and safety, presents it as a professional and integrated act and realizes it on the ground.
For his part, Haitham Al Hajri Chairperson of the Union of Workers in Kuwait University said that the signing came after a series of meetings, which sought to establish mutual cooperation in reducing the risk of work accidents, dissemination of culture of human rights and facilitating of ways to create work environment that promotes and encourages a culture of human rights within the social fabric.
Al Hajri said that the Union of Workers at Kuwait University is one of the trade union organizations that was formed in accordance with the provisions of Part 13 of Labor Law in the civil sector No. 38 of 1964, known by Ministerial Decree No. (127) with effect from 07.09.2005 and was published in the official gazette “Kuwait Today” on 07.24.2005.
Experience
Al Hajri emphasized that the union aims to open up to the experience of associations and exchange of experiences and skills towards the contribution to the development of society.
He added that the memorandum of understanding between the two parties is in the frame of greater good of the community issues. And it consists of eleven articles that form a framework for the development of cooperation and consolidation of the bonds of mutual coordination between them regarding the implementation of projects that raise community awareness, and promote, encourage and disseminate them. The memorandum includes cooperation in the implementation of “Prevention” project in addition to the various issues of joint interest aspects, including the exchange of experiences, visits, consultation, publications and studies, and organization of training courses and workshops, holding joint events and conferences, and contribution and coordination in support of human rights fields.
Under this memorandum, each party shall, whenever possible, involve the other party in the activities and events that are the subject of its interest, and the parties shall consider the possibility of developing joint and specific projects to promote the objectives of their cooperation in accordance with a specific time frame.
